Gilt rug is one of the products designed and produced for the Noni Collective exhibition presented at Salone del Mobile, Ventura Lambrate, Milan 2016.
Gilt Rug explores the idea of national values driven by collective memory. As an outsider I have observed an aversion to abundance in the Finnish approach to design and daily life. This is often explained by Finns as being a result of a dire lack felt by recent generations during wartime in Finland. The rug is inspired by the traditional Finnish hand-tufted carpets, called Ryijy, which are beautiful but restrained. The Finnish ideal is confronted with the uncomfortably excessive addition, to this longstanding craft, of foil, flock and fringe.
